“For those who are willing to make an effort, great miracles and wonderful treasures are in store.”

Isaac Bashevis Singer

“Our home was always half unfurnished. Father’s study was empty except for books. In the bedroom there were two bedsteads, and that was all. Mother kept no foods stocked in the pantry. She bought exactly what she needed for one day, and no more, often because there was no money to pay for more.”

Our last story of the evening is The Purim Gift from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s poignant memoir ‘In My Father’s Court’. It talks of his childhood, in pre-WWI Warsaw, during the Jewish holiday Purim.
