Hanukkah is an 8-day long celebration of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 BC following the victory of Jewish fighters over a huge Syrian army. The Temple, which had been taken over by Antiochus, ruler of the Syrians, had been violated and damaged. While the Jews were purifying and repairing the Temple, a miracle occurred. A tiny bit of oil for the holy lamp — barely enough for one day — lasted eight days. Source: archive.org.
