Hanukkah is an 8-day long celebration of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 BC following the victory of Jewish fighters over a huge Syrian army. The Temple, which had been taken over by Antiochus, ruler of the Syrians, had been violated and damaged. While the Jews were purifying and repairing the Temple, a miracle occurred. A tiny bit of oil for the holy lamp — barely enough for one day — lasted eight days. Source: archive.org.
Couch Theatre will be celebrating the first day of Hanukkah (22nd December 2019) at Tisch & Stuhl, Gaußstraße 60, in Hamburg Altona at 2.30 p.m. Traditionally, the menorah is lit at sundown at around 4 p.m.
Rebecca Garron will read some wonderful short stories from Isaac Bashevis Singer (including Zlateh The Goat) and will be accompanied on the piano by Paul Baeyertz. Director: Joana O’Neil.
This production is also very child-friendly, so bring your children along. They get the reduced price of €12 (plus booking fee). We will also be offering traditional jam doughnuts.
